Bathhouse in the Dunes

Located in temperate Pismo, CA, my design plays with sunlight and water to passively light and cool itself.

Dunes are ever-changing in nature - a sea of sand whose tides can only be appreciated by long term residents. Combine this fluid environment with human’s innate connection to water and we get a completely isolated experience that peaks curiosity yet calms the mind: a special place for a bathhouse.

The design concept for this bathhouse was a series of shells that allow the wind to pass over the building smoothly and allow the light to bounce into the space. These shells hug the user and, at the same time, provide a sense of awe in their monumental size. The first floor is designed to be doorless in the public areas so that the user feels uninhibited and therefore more relaxed.
